dude....im a Rift junkie...yep, addicted to rift. Some claim it to be a WoW clone. It aint. Well, one has to remember...wow got its foot in the door at the right time. So people who hadnt experienced mmos to its magnitude, only think of WoW when they compare. Im not putting you into that catagory Dark, hehe Then there are those like Dark that didnt get the bug like me. Alot of games have similar playstyles. EQ, EQII, SWG, LoTRo, WoW, Warhammer, ect ect. Its impossible to get away from that completely. But coming up on Tues. 15th Rift Beta 7 ( open beta)....so try it out. the beta event will run from 15th 10am pst to 21st 10am pst. Those of us that preordered then get to log in on the 24th for "headstart" and get to making our actual toons right up to the 1st when it goes live for everyone to pay and play.

Got into the open beta myself. After some problems getting in ( I read later that they had some trouble with the servers going up and down for a few hours), I finally hopped in and played for about b6 hours straight.
There are some similarities to WoW, but I wouldn't call it a WoW clone any more than I'd call WoW an EQ clone. What sells the game for me are the Rift events. They're similar to the PQs in WAR in that they take place in the game and anyone in the area can jump in. It reminded me also of the "attack on the fort" action in Tabula Rosa. Another cool aspect is being able to multiclass your character somewhat. In Rift they call it aquiring another soul, and even though it has some limitations ( the class has to be within your chosen archetype of warrior, mage, cleric or rogue, so for instance you can't make a wizard/ rogue type of character) it's still a nice change from WoW's cookie cutter classes. Probably the most polished looking game I've seen since WoW. Not 100% sure I'd buy it and subscribe, only because with my very limited time and budget I wouldn't be able to play this and Star Wars ( whenever it comes out). But boy it sure is tempting.

Ive been involved with this project since Alpha stage 1. It is a very well thought out game, with a little bit in it for everyone. It is nto a wow clone, as said above, but takes parts of a bunch of different games, and melds it into a very polished and fun playing game. There are NPC invasions on towns, Rifts to close, PVE, PvP (multiple types), raids, instances... collections, achievements..
and that is just the start

I've been playing Rift for the last few closed beta's.
I played until level 31. I ran a few of the dungeons. I raided. I pvp'd. I crafted, alot. (Weaponsmith)
While it is an entertaining game, with very nice environments, and fun voice-overs, I stick to my previous thoughts. Although it does have some aspects that are sort of unique, after having played Aion, WoW, LOTRO, and many others, for many years, the similarities were uncanny. The only aspect I did like was the mix matching of classes you could do. In the end, it just feels outdated to me. Everything about the game has been done before, many times. The "rift events" are very much like what happens in Aion.
This is just my opinion, and I dont mean to offend anyone, but i'm gonna pass on this one.

I sort of have to agree with Dark on this one. The game is very much like all the rest , especially Aion. I have Beta / played lots of MMO's at this point and I am so done with WoW. Rift is well put together and runs like a dream. The instant group events all over are very well done. I did not find an easy way to do dungeons as I had a quest that let there and the place was empty so if there is a mechanism to build a group for a dungeon I didn't see it. Over all I have to give it high marks. It's about time something comes out that is this polished. I spent money on Tabula Rasa, where the beta was good and then they changed stuff and the game sucked.
I am thinking I might get this game just to toy with until Star Wars comes out. Lots of hope for that game but I am not as optimistic as Dark about the release. There is no official word so it could be a while.
On a side note, Witcher2 is coming out and that may be nice entertainment and could eat up some time.
I played a cleric to lvl 18 now I am going to try a warrior.
What server are people playing if any? I am seriously contemplating getting this game as a filler. I have the expansion of WoW and can't seem to bring myself to even level up from the last two levels.

Now this game looks sweet too. A new mmo that comes out with little to no bug and crash issues? Sounds good to me.

so far no buddy keys... its in preorder open mode now.. the traditional 1 week head-start - and they had well over 1 million preorders, with no crashes.. they had to make up 15 new servers, but by the end of the day, everyone was playing on the type of server they wanted. Not the smoothest opening because of the amount of people ( they had close to 300000 preorders that day alone)..
I am with a group that I played LoTRO and EQ2 with.. already at lvl 18 (taking a break before my eyes burn out - I cant powerlevel like I used to...) and have had 1 bug, which was mobs stuck in the environment..

Sorry marna....im real bad with the boards...never keep on em long enough to catch the pm's peeps send me on time, hehe. Anyhoo....Im still a rift freak...mixed it up a bit. Not super gear or anything tho. Not un Sunrest at the moment. A few defiant guilds came over when we got the free character/guild transfers started. And it got crazy...hordes of 50s rollin accross the map killin anythin thats guardian. Part of my guild was more into pve and one in particular ive gone wherever her and her husband goes...Since EQII, hehe. And he's a real pvp freak, but even he had to give it a rest for now, till Readit and a few other guilds get bored and go elsewhere. So for now we are on Deepwood, just a simple pve shard. Our guild is Psychotic and my guys are Tred(dps cleric, which has be fun in WFs) and Valorn(my rogue) The Rogue is set up as a ranger type pve, 51 point bard, and a 44 nightblade/22 assassin/0infiltrator for pvp. I dont play like a nut tho...a few hours a night... Keeps me wantin to play, yet not so bad as to needin a few week break, hehe.

I may give it a go, at least for a month. Part of the GenCon free swag bag was a copy of the game with a free 30 day sub.
