Agreed. Saw it on opening day also. Waiting for the DVD already. Anyone who liked Spiderman 1 will not be disappointed by Spiderman 2, that's for sure.

This is what you get when the director (Sam Rami) is both an avid fan and respectful of the source material. He pulled numerous story elements from classic issues of the comic: Peter getting sick and losing his powers, Peter getting fed up with not having a real life and throwing his costume away in an alley, Harry discovering Peter's identity and his father's legacy and Goblin equipment.
It was also interesting in light of the talk about how well comic book super heroes realize a modern mythology that was given at Origins by Statesmen and two other Cryptic Studios team members. One of their premises was that comic book heroes are a flawed mythology because corporate concerns basically prevent the hero from ever completing his story arc, i.e. they have a great origin, but become frozen in a never-ending series of quests that preclude an eventual ending (like all other ancient myths)...and then the stories become more-and-more about the heroes' continuity than mythic story achetypes.
So, what made Spider-Man 2 so powerful was that things really happend that affected Peter Parker's heroic journey (a lot like the Empire Strikes Back, my favorite Star Wars movie by far). If this becomes a series like the Bond films, it's hard to imagine that level of story telling going through, say, Spider-Man 10 or 20. After Peter and Mary Jane get married, like in the current comics continuity, then what? Spider-Baby?
I loved returning to City of Heroes and super leaping around the city after seeing this movie, btw!

I was NOT a huge fan of the first movie. The effects were crap, too herky jerky for me to suspend belief,I hated the Goblin's costume, especially the helmet ( William Defoe is a terrific actor, they should've used some kind of make up affects so we could seee his facial expressions),etc.. But Spiderman 2,is well, just amazing hehe! I've seen it twice already.I'm such a fanboy. Everything I loved about those Spiderman comics I learned to read on as a child were in this movie. The best Spidey villain,Doc Oc. Peter's personal problems and the great characters in his life, that made us actually care about the guy Peter Parker. One criticism i read was somone harping about the soap operaish feel to some of his personal life, especially with Mary Jane. But that was part of the spirit and charm of those early spidey comics ( especially Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider Man). And this has gotta be the best thing Sam Raimi has ever done. And the special effects were really great and believeable.CGI has come a long way in a short period of time, much better than the effects in the last 2 Matrix movies. This is I think the best movie based on those great Marvel comics.Maybe the best comic book movie ever. It's up there anyway. Flawed, believable characters, lots of melodrama, great colorful villains and heroes, and kick ass action. My favorite scenes were( not givin away spoilers,no worries) the "raindrops keep fallin on my head" sequence, very funny and goofy, the elevator ride ( hilarious),the people on the subway, and how they treat a fallen hero ,and Mary Jane's " go gettim Tiger" ( I loved that, and so did most in the theatre, people cheered at that line). There were lots of other great, funny, exciting, touching scenes( I loved every scene with Aunt May,is why I didn't mention those),but those are the most memorable for me. I didn't mention the fight scenes or Spidey swinging through New York, because those are a given ( they are wonderfully done though). This is the second movie I've seen this year where people applauded at the end ( the first was Fahrenheit 911). I saw Ebert and Roper's review, and kinda agree with what Ebert said, that you could take out all the superhero stuff, and just have a movie about this guy Peter Parker, and it woiuld still be a great film.I think that's pretty accurate. The story, acting, characterization, pacing, direction are all top notch. It's not just a great superhero movie,it's a really good movie, period.

I loved all these, plus the asian lady singing and playing violin.
