All cynicism aside, I will say the new artwork looks nice. And like it or not, no MMPORG has "topped" UO as far as I'm concerned...yet. If only they could have taken any of the systems or ideas they started but never finished ( factions?Virtues?Anyone?Buellor!) or taken the things that were fun and expanded them like boats, treasure hunts, crafting ( not BODs , stuff that dedicated crafters could make that were cool.Crafters should be able to make things just as powerful, if not more powerful than drops).. It's also the only MMPORG that has encouraged rp at all ( though from what I've heard, that's no longer the case, sadly).

Too bad they cancelled the first time. An expansion just isn't the same as a new game. Btw, anyone needing the install disk for UO to play on Asgeroth Isle can download the free 15 day uo demo. The client works on Asgeroth Isle too. www.uo.com/demo.html

The graphics are nice enough but I don't see myself ever going back because when it comes down to it's still just the same game. They really need a whole new game (even if it's isometric) to generate any real interest for me.

True, and as far as I'm concerned, they've burnt that bridge ( coming out with a new game only to cancel it at the last second) so many times i just can't take them seriously any more.

Official press release www.uo.com/UOKRpressrelease.htmlEA Mythic!!!! Arghhhh EA ANNOUNCES ULTIMA ONLINEtm: KINGDOM REBORN (working title) The game that firmly established the MMORPG genre receives a massive visual overhaul and new content in 2007 REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 24, 2006 – The legendary kingdom of Britannia—and the online world that helped forge PC gaming’s fastest growing genre—is about to be reborn. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn (working title), an exciting new upgrade to the genre-defining Ultima Online™. Much more than an expansion, Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn is a complete make-over of the online world with a new graphics engine, a state-of-the-art user interface and enough new content for even the most seasoned players. Additionally, nine years of content and features will be preserved and enhanced with all-new graphics, making Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn one of the largest and deepest massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) in existence. “It’s been nine years since Ultima Online first proved that online games could be very popular,” said EA Mythic General Manager, Mark Jacobs. “And now, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the UO team and the support of the players over the years, a new day is dawning for this groundbreaking game.” The new graphics engine will maintain the game’s original perspective while giving it a bold new look that takes advantage of 3D-accelerated special effects. The team is busy re-drawing more than 9,000 pieces of art with which the entire map of Ultima Online -- more than 14 million tiles -- will be re-built, giving the whole game a vibrant new look. Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn is also a full-featured expansion pack with a wide array of new content and features that will be announced later this year. The new expansion will include a playable race, and add to or enhance many of the key features of Ultima Online: epic battles versus powerful monsters, deep dangerous dungeons, player-versus-player combat, creative housing design, crafting, and much more. EA Mythic, formerly Mythic Entertainment, and the Ultima Online team are working together to bring about one of the most ambitious upgrades of any operating MMORPG. Created in such a way that current players who choose not to upgrade will be able to play without interruption, Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn will ship in 2007 for PC. Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information about Ultima Online, please visit www.uo.com. New art assets for Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn can be found at www.info.ea.com.

To my mind, one of their big problems with adding content is that every time they add content any more they just screw up the game further. I don't see why they feel a need to add races. People could role-play orcs and savages just fine without having to create characters of those races.

Well now, orcs would have been cool back in the day, as would have been lizardmen, even undead. But elves and ninjas... COME ON!
And yeah reading those words EA Mythic and "formerly Mythic" were just depressing things to read. I'm amazed they still even mention PvP, as factions were broken years ago . Just one of the many things EA half-assed and never bothered to fix. *sigh*
Ok this is too dang depressing..

UO is done and over as far as I am concerned. The fact the EA now owns DAoC and holds the future of Warhammer Online is very scary.
Although the PC Online market seems to still have a lot of investor dollars, the PC gaming market is on a major decline. BOX online play is becoming dominant.
There is not one promising game in development that really seems like it will move people to playing it.
It is all very sad that most of the money is all in EA's, Turbines and SOE's hands. Yikes!
Oh and Bioware has something in the works but they hired all the old Dev people. Not to smart if your looking to build something new and better.

Well, I'm not quite as pessimistic about pc games. Titan Quest is a fun hack n slash game. Similar to Diablo2 but better. Civ 4 was/is great. Warhammer 40k Dawn of War is/was great, and there's a sequel coming. Not to mention HalfLife 2 and it's episodes.Episode One ws really good, can't wait for the next. And don't forget about Spore, mthat looks kind of neat to me ( but it's also a long way off). I'm looking forward to NWN2, especially after seeing and reading about stuff they showed at Gencon , and the online NWN PWs are to me, much better than most of the multiplay pay to play MMOGs out there... But there aint no denying that the focus is on online stuff. I guess after WoW's success, suddenly everyone wants to focus on online games again. Too bad most of em look seem like crap.Warhammer online looked pretty good at Gencon. Graphically, it is similar to WoW, but darker ( like Warhammer should), higher polys, not so Saturday morning cartoon looking as WoW.Hopefully you'll be able to customise your characters more, so a high level Warhammner character doesn't look like every other high level character. But boxed single play pc games are heading back to being considered a niche market again I think. But who knows? Microsoft seems to be trying to push the game friednliness of Windows Vista, and this thing they're doing to get folks developing for Xbox 360 can only help the pc as well. I aint givin' up on the pc yet ( I admit though I want one of those Wii systems, they look and sound neat). The biggest problem really is at the end of the day,it's just more fun to play with and against your friends online. I love Oblivion ( some really terrific mods out there now), but I hardly boot it up.When I have enough free time to play something I gravitate towards online stuff. I miss the "old" online days in a way though. Back then there was a game fior every taste. There's a ton of stuff being made, but it'sd all the same! I want a fun online version of Mechwarrior again, a good fighter game like Air Warriors, etc..Online play is like cable now.100 channels and nothing to watch hehe. And dangit, I want a good space combat game like Wing Commander or Descent Freespace ( oh descent Freespace Online, why hasn't thought about making you?) again.I almost condidered re upping to SWG just for the outer space stuff. My poor Extreme 3d Pro just sits in the corner, collecting dust and weeping Sorry for being my usual long winded self... again
