Sorry but there is no non gaming forum.Anyway I just upgraded to Win XP.It's great except for one thing,I keep getting spammed by these messenger pop-ups.I have no idea how to stop them, and am wondering if they're exclusive to Win XP users or people with cable modems( and no I don't currently use a firewall program)? Never had this problem before. I guess I'll have to break down and buy something like Norton's Internet Security.Would that stop it?

Three must have programs: Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Anti-Virus, and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Your problem should be taken care of with the firewall. If not, the Spybot will remove any embedded programs that may be recording keystrokes, running away with cookies, causing pop ups for penile enlargement sunscreen, and using your computer to do the evil bidding of Regis Philbin. The best part about it - it's free.
Hope I was of assistance.

I know how to fix this I will go look for it right now.....
*steps away for few minutes*
In Windows XP: (1) Select "Start" (2) Choose "Control Panel" (3) Choose "Administrative Tools" (4) Choose "Services" (5) Right-click on "Messenger" (6) Select "Stop"
To permanetely remove do 1-4 then... (7) Right click "Messenger" (8) Select "Properties" (9) Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK"

OldTer beat me to it but is correct in the steps you need to take to get rid of the annoyance.
Anyone running a NT based platform (Win NT, Win2000, Win XP) is subject to this messenger harrasment.
Too me this kind of advertising is pointless. It doesn't give anything that allows you to just click and go to buy something. You actually have to manually copy and paste the url to your browser window. How many people would go that far unless they just wanted to figure out how to disable the annoying pop-up add?
I did and that is when I found out how to disable it. I found a contact email on the webpage and wrote a email to them asking about it. The url's usually take you directly to a e-store site where they want you to put in your credit-card and instantly buy something.
Super annoying and hopefully it will be outlawed someday or atleast Microsoft will set the Messenger to disabled unless activated by default.

I too have been plagued by the popups. Good info. I use Norton Internet Security. I do not use Norton Firewall.
Do I need both? What does the firewall do that internet security doesn't do?

I was under the impression that Norton Internet Security was a suite of software including the firewall. Norton Firewall is just a stand alone firewall.

You've got it right.Norton's internet security comes with firewall plus you get antivirus as well.

I have a cheap router with NAT which is a low level firewall. Plus it allows you to share most cable and dsl. bout $ 50-75 and provides a little protection. I will be getting soon a "real" firewall soon. www.netgear.com/products/details/FVS318.asp. It has Stateful packet inspection and ip/keyword filtering and logging bout $ 150. plus its an 8 port 10/100 switch. No software overhead with hardware, and not much more expensive than software solutions. Also I run Norton Antivirus weekly and ad-aware as well ( http://www.lavasoft.de) the version 6 of ad-aware is free and has updates. I had the same problem with notify after I upgraded to win2k.
